Hello

Greetings and welcome.  I appreciate you stopping by to get to know me and my work a bit more.

I am a singer/songwriter and enjoy creating music in multiple genres, though mostly call my style alt rock, alt country, alt Americana, and most recently, melodic house. I have been described as a little bit Johnny, a little bit Roy, and a whole lot of the King.  I welcome the comparison and also appreciate inspiration from many different styles of music and musical artists.

I grew up listening to country music in the car and at home with my mom.  I was also listening to pop music I was introduced to by my sisters and the media including Madonna, Melissa Etheridge, and Toni Braxton.

I started to write songs at an early age and learned songwriting was a cathartic process that often helped me feel better about any particular issue I may have been struggling with or wanting to find a way to express.

I view songs as stories set to music, and yet they are also unique in their own format as a writing genre.  Songs can be told with or without music, with or without words, and with or without sound.

My latest music project is called Running With This Dream. The album is a collaboration with producer Velvet Code and So Fierce Music.  11 new tracks encompass the album including the singles Kaleidoscope, The Future, and Rise Up.

My previous release, Mvto, is what I call my songwriting anthology. Mvto is the Muscogee word for thank you. When I was putting this album together, I wanted to say thank you to my family, friends, and fans who have listened to my music over the years.  The album is composed of my favorite songs I have written throughout my life including four new tracks (Dear Mr. Dean, Mvto, Stay, and Generous) and six tracks that have appeared on previous releases.

In addition to being a musician, I am also a writer, public speaker, educator, and psychotherapist. To learn more about my writing, academic, and therapeutic work, please visit: rogerjkuhn.com

My Story

I grew up in North Dakota where I began my performing life in musical theater in local high school and community theater productions.  After high school I moved to New York City to pursue a career in music.  In 2008 my video, What's Your Name, was named a top ten video of the year by the Logo Channel's Click List, and the song would win Song of the Year by the Stonewall Foundation for the Arts.  My music has been heard on radio stations in the US and Canada and I have had the pleasure to perform on stages across the US, Canada, Mexico, and Spain.

I have released five independent albums of original music; Johari's Window, Proof, Every Year Around Xmas Time, Live for the Light, and Mvto.  In 2024,  my album Running With This Dream was released on the So Fierce Music label.

In 2022 I was featured in the Levis Pride campaign for my work and activism with Two-Spirit people and decolonizing sexuality.  I have a PhD in Human Sexuality with a Concentration in Clinical Practice.  You can call me Dr. if you like, though all my friends just call me Rog.

I now call the redwoods of California home.

ND born. NY reborn. CA all grown up.
